10 Tips to Help You Nail Your New Year’s Resolutions
The holiday season is behind us, which means it’s time to return to reality and get started on those New Year’s Resolutions!
But if you’re like millions of Americans, you’ll start off very motivated and committed to your resolutions, especially the ones that will improve your health… Only to lose that motivation and commitment within a few weeks.
That’s okay, though! New Year’s Resolutions aren’t supposed to be easy. It’s challenging to push through those doubtful moments and stop being hard on yourself about it - that’s why we’ve put together this list of 10 tips to help you nail your New Year’s Resolutions:
SMART resolutions are:
- Specific - Resolutions should be specific and well-defined.
- Measurable - Make sure your progress toward your resolution is able to be tracked.
- Achievable - Make sure your resolutions are realistic enough to actually be accomplished.
- Relevant - The resolutions you write should fit your lifestyle and be goals that you aspire to complete.
- Timely - Set a deadline for your resolutions to hold you accountable.

Don’t overload yourself with too many resolutions to keep track of. Focus on one or two at a time to keep yourself from being overwhelmed and give you a better chance of completing them.
It may seem pointless, but writing a detailed, step-by-step plan breaking down how you will fulfill each resolution has a world of benefits. For example, if you want to start eating healthy, research some healthy foods, prepare a grocery list, and plan a date and time for grocery shopping.

If you’ve written resolutions that are similar to ones you’ve failed to complete in
the past, think about what caused you to fail in the first place. Not motivated enough to work out on your own? Start working out with a friend! Too tempted by all the snacks in your house? Toss them out and replace them with healthier ones.
Don’t burn yourself out trying to finish your resolutions right away. For example, if your top resolution is to work out more, don’t start day one with a four-hour, high-impact, full-body workout! Instead, start with a half-hour to an hour of moderate exercise (speedwalking, jogging, swimming some laps, biking a couple of miles) two times a week, and build from there.
Tell anyone you trust about your resolutions and goals and ask them to hold you
accountable. For example, if you’re trying to cut back on alcohol, coordinate with your friends to meet for a movie instead of happy hour. Trying to eat healthier? Ask your friends to meet at a restaurant with healthier options.

Things sometimes tend to get harder before they get easier - and when they do and you lose some of that motivation that started you off so strong in the first place, it’s time to think positive. Write your goals for the day down again, use selfies to track your progress - whatever you can come up with to keep you going!
It may seem counterproductive and feel like it can ruin your entire goal, but some cake or a donut every now and then won’t keep you from reaching your goals. Instead of stopping everything to dwell on small failures, focus on all the ways you can do better tomorrow!

Remember, your resolutions are yours, no one else’s. So when you achieve some of
your daily goals or complete a resolution, reward yourself - after all, you deserve it!
With a calendar or a journal, track your progress and use it to create a plan and keep
yourself on track.
